Competition and Format
Hockey competitions in the Wellington region are organised by Wellington Hockey Association (WHA). NUJHC registers all of its teams and players with WHA. Most of the money we collect from player subs is paid over to WHA in the form of affiliation fees and turf game fees for National Hockey Stadium (NHS), Elsdon, Fraser Park and Maidstone. All game rules are set by WHA.
NUJHC organizes and fields teams for the winter season. Games are held on Saturday mornings and range in duration from 20 to 25 minutes per half, with a 3-minute half-time break. Most games in school years 3 to 6 are held either at Raroa Intermediate School or our club turf at 26 Black Rock Road. Year 5/6 Premier and Yr 7/8 games are mostly held at NHS, although there are some games in the Elsdon, Hutt and Paraparaumu.
Summer hockey games are organized and run directly by WHA. Summer hockey is very informal, the main focus being on fun and having a good run-around with a stick and a ball. Many NUJHC players play in the summer hockey competition as it's a great way to stay fit and engaged with the game, but the club has no role in organising it. That said, we are happy to assist our members with equipment and turf access for training over summer, if needed. The game formats are 30 mins straight through, with no half- time breaks.
