Q: When will trainings be held?

A: During the hockey season, training times and days depend on what suits the individual coach and confirmed later in Term 1. Once a team manager is appointed they will liaise with the team and coach to get a day/time that suits the majority of people. Please bear in mind that it is impossible to get this right for everyone.

Q: Cancellations - How do I know if hockey is cancelled?

A: Hockey is rarely cancelled because all hockey is played on artificial surfaces.  However in the case of a major weather event,  Wellington Hockey Association will post a message on its Facebook page. It will also send push notifications via its app (available for iOS and Android). We will also republish WHA cancellation announcements on our Facebook page and communicate them to you via our coordinators and team managers.

The rule is: if there is no cancellation by WHA, then the game is still on and you need to show up at the turf. In rare cases, this will mean that a WHA official (NHS games) or the coaches of both teams may nevertheless end up cancelling the game after everyone has arrived, e.g. because the turf is flooded and unplayable. This can be inconvenient, but conditions can change so quickly that in marginal cases, cancellation decisions can only be made on site on a game-by-game basis.

Q: My child has never played hockey before. Can s/he still pay for your club?

A: Yes, absolutely! Our teams are based on age groups and the vast majority are development-oriented. Hockey is suitable for beginners of all ages (one of the many benefits of being a minority sport!). If your child is happy to give it a try, then register her/him with confidence: s/he will pick up the necessary skills during the season. If s/he is a bit nervous and would like to 'try before s/he buys', you can always register her/him for our 3-session, no-obligation Have-a-Go program in February.

Q: I know the registration cut-off date has passed and that trials and selections are over, but can my child still join the club and be put into a team?

A: This depends on whether any of our teams require additional players to make up optimal numbers. Please contact the club to enquire.
